What Are Keyloggers?

Keyloggers reap havoc by installing themselves on your computer without your knowledge for one purpose only, to steal your personal and financial information. A software keylogger, once installed on the user’s computer, makes a copy of all keystrokes. Details of the keystrokes are then secretly saved to a hidden file on the computer's hard drive where they can be retrieved by the hacker who created the keylogging program. In some cases the key logger software will send the file to the hacker’s anonymous email address. According to the SANS Institute, the non-profit security research organization, nearly 10 million households have at least one system infected by a keylogging program. According to a recent article in SearchSecurity.com (June 21, 2006) data theft affects 88 million-plus Americans.

How Do Keyloggers Work?

Keyloggers sniff (hook) the keyboard data as it makes its way from the keyboard to your browser. Some current anti-keylogging software prevents these hooks from being used by keyloggers; however, these are not always effective and can be circumvented by keyloggers in many cases.

All anti-spam and anti-virus tools are based on scanning a computer for files with a particular signature; however the database containing signatures of known bad files has to be continuously updated. The major caveat in this approach is the existence of the signature of a known problematic file. Spammers and criminals are currently deploying sophisticated software that dynamically changes the file signature, rendering current anti-spam tools ineffective. Also, there is significant time spent between a criminal deploying a keylogger and the anti-keylogging signature being updated
